Head Carpenter Job Description
As Carpentry Head, one will maintain a list of ongoing projects, including delegating and coordinating all
carpentry responsibilities. One will work closely with the Technical Director and other Local One
departments to ensure the successful execution of all productions.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
● Act as a representative of the Carpentry Department in meetings with the various clients,
Administration and Head of Departments
● Organize, plan and execute all carpentry & rigging responsibilities in a professional, safe and timely
manner for incoming events based on internal show notes, client riders and requirements
● Schedule regular work calls to maintain all rigging and carpentry related areas of responsibility
● Respond promptly to incoming communications (calls, emails and texts) from Administration,
Technical Director and Department Heads
● Perform and supervise care and maintenance of all in house carpentry and rigging equipment
● Oversee carpentry crew and the smooth running of the carpentry department - working to high
standards of accuracy and detail
● Draw up and maintain complete carpentry/rigging equipment lists and inventories - maintaining
adequate parts inventory and purchase requests of necessary items.
● Source and hire qualified and knowledgeable crew for all events according to in-house processes
● Confirm all overhire calls are filled and all crew are present for their assigned calls
● Provide and confirm necessary processing information for new hires regarding COVID protocols
● Knowledge and enforcement of standards of operation in carpentry and rigging that are safe for
both personnel and equipment
● Work and manage all load-ins, load outs, rehearsals, performances and work calls
● Ensure compliance with all safety protocols
● Regularly inspect building’s rigging and carpentry elements for needed repairs
● Moderate control of all materials (including but not limited to flammable materials) in accordance
with local and state regulations.
● Oversee maintenance of Flame Retardancy Certifications for fabric stage elements in conjunction
with the Technical Director
● Collaborate advance planning with Technical Director and Visiting Company Production Staff for
events by interpreting ground plans, scenic drawings, rigging plots and fly cue run sheets
● Responsible for the safe and efficient planning, load in and load out of all incoming events
Qualifications
● Strong communication skills. Capable of determining how best to work with diverse incoming
clients
● Ability to perform physical tasks such as moving and lifting materials as well as spending long
periods standing
● Excellent leadership, management and motivational skills with the ability to oversee crews
● Able to manage flexible schedules, cope with pressure and be willing to work long hours to meet
tight deadlines
● Excellent practical, organizational, planning and time management abilities
● Capable written, oral communication and presentation skills
● Able to prioritize responsibilities and multi-task
● Demonstrate attention to detail, creative problem-solving skills and a track record of on-their-feet
problem solving
● Ability to exemplify strong leadership skills and successfully operate independently and
collaboratively as part of a larger team
● Experience and knowledge of theatrical and arena rigging
● Able to interpret ground plans, scenic drawings, schematics and rigging plots
● Able to work in a safe and efficient manner
● Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the carpentry and rigging trades
● Knowledge of standard and safe rigging practices
● Ability to determine proper tools and equipment required for job related tasks
● Ability to use a computer - working knowledge of e-mail, MS Office: Word, Excel and Google
● Ability to operate stationary and hand-held power tools knowledgeably and safely
● Knowledge of OSHA
