About The Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center

Following 9/11, the community and civic planning process that resulted in the World Trade Center master plan in 2003 envisioned a new performing arts center as one of the anchors of the site. Now under construction, The Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center (the “PAC”) is the realization of that plan and process. Programming at the PAC is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2023.

The role

The PAC is seeking a Crew Captain who will begin in February or March 2023 to help launch this new organization in this state-of-the-art highly flexible and reconfigurable facility. This position will lead a team of stagehands in the execution of all duties that fall under their jurisdiction.

In conjunction with Production Management and the Technical Director, the Crew Captain is responsible for ensuring that all productions are presented seamlessly and of the highest quality. The Crew Captain will be integral in the planning, staffing, and logistics of all load in’s, techs, and changeovers. The Crew Captain may also run performances at the PAC. 

The Crew Captain must demonstrate a personal passion for, as well as a track record of advancing inclusive, anti-racist goals in their career. The Crew Captain must be a strategic thinker and creative problem solve. The ideal candidate will be excited to support the expansive vision of the PAC and make best use of its uniquely flexible facility.

Your key responsibilities

  • Lead, plan, develop, and implement all aspects of production work in the Crew Captain’s area of responsibility including load in, load out, logistics, and technical problem solving.

  • As assigned, advance productions and review riders to ensure efficient and effective use of labor, materials, and other resources.

  • Review technical drawings and coordinate use of shared resources, including airspace, in-house equipment, and inventory across venues and productions.

  • Collaborate with The PAC artistic team and external artists, designers, and producers to help them realize the most creative and highest quality work specifically created for the PAC’s unique spaces.

  • In conjunction with Production Management and the Technical Director, staff crew calls as required in accordance with The PAC’s equity and inclusion goals. Ensure proper training of production staff, with a special focus on health and safety (e.g. Fall Arrest training).

  • Foster a work environment that is safe, respectful, supportive and that embodies the values of equity and inclusion.

  • Work hours for this position will vary greatly from day to day and week to week. g. Crew Captain must be available to work during matinee, evening, and weekend performance hours.

What it takes to be successful in the role:

  • At least 5-7 years of technical leadership experience in the field of Technical Theatre

  • Can demonstrate a working knowledge of all primary backstage skills including lighting, sound, video, carpentry, props, and rigging.

  • Can demonstrate a high level of expertise in at least one of the primary back stage skills such as lighting, sound, video, carpentry, props, and rigging.

  • Expert level knowledge of stagecraft and best practices.

  • Recent, successful experience of hiring and leading multi-disciplinary crews on large-scale events.

  • Excellent communication and intermediary skills in working with management, supervisors, and colleagues both verbally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated ability to conceive, strategize, manage, and prioritize between multiple projects, with accuracy and attention to detail.

Our ideal candidate will also possess:

  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of these areas below:

    • Experience with reconfigurable theatre spaces

    • Experience opening a new performance space.

    • Experience creating operating paradigms, systems, processes, and procedures for a new facility, organization, or performance space.

  • Experience with Stage and seating automation systems.

  • Understanding of data networks as typically used in stage applications.

  • A thorough working knowledge of multiple scales and forms of performance: including opera, theater, dance, music, and special events.

  • Knowledge of theatrical and OSHA safety regulations and practices. If not OSHA 30 Certified, willingness to become so at PAC expense upon hire.

  • Expertise with various software programs including MS Office Suite, Dropbox, Slack, Zoom, Payroll Software, Vectorworks, and AutoCAD (both 2d and 3d drafting)

  • Enthusiasm for learning new techniques, increasing competency with current industry practices, and expanding problem-solving skills.

Work Environment

The PAC is a multistory building with work taking place on all levels, not all of which are accessible via elevator. The Crew Captain will work at height on catwalks, genie lifts, and/or ladders during loadin, strike, and when troubleshooting. This position also requires comfort working in low light conditions. The Crew Captain will be part of the moving, installing, and removing of theatrical equipment throughout the building. Must be able to carry 50lbs individually, or heavier objects as part of a team lift. This position requires night and weekend work, particularly during tech and performances. It may require local travel for rental prep or shop builds.

Compensation and benefits

This is an hourly, non-exempt, benefited position paying between $45.00 / hour - $55.00 / hour.
