Dear Brothers & Sisters,
The Union continues to monitor and appeal the efforts taking place in Washington D.C. Yesterday, the Senate Republicans introduced their opening bid for what they propose to be the next federal coronavirus relief package, the “HEALS” Act. Given the ongoing health crisis and work stoppage within our jurisdiction and across the country, this proposed bill is ridiculously far from properly addressing our needs and the needs of millions of workers.
As I have noted before, on May 15th, Democrats in the House of Representatives passed a bill that addressed most concerns for workers put out of work by COVID-19. Senate leader Mitch McConnell (R) refused to call the bill (HEROES Act) and instead drafted his own bill that cuts the current weekly federal unemployment supplement of $600 to $200 a week, and his bill only extends payment until this September. At this point McConnell can’t get his own Republican party members to agree on anything, whether his own proposed plan, or any other plan to assist the working families of our country. Also concerning is the passage of any new bill may take a few weeks to enact, but Local One, the IA and the entire U.S labor movement are all fighting to maintain as much of the weekly $600 supplement until at least the end of 2020. Let’s hope to maintain the weekly $600, or a Republican compromise that is much more favorable than $200 per week, and only until September. Please stand by.

On another front and equally important, there continues to be promising vaccine news. Moderna, AstraZeneca and Pfizer are all in phase three trials. A conservative Dr. Fauci is actually touting cautious optimism. Dr. Fauci believes an effective vaccine may become available by Thanksgiving, or with any real luck, earlier. Unfortunately for us, the creation of a vaccine and people’s willingness to actually take it, is the only meaningful way to assure we can get back to work in a more timely basis. Let’s join together and hope that something positive comes from any and all testing & trials for an effective vaccine that works.
The Union continues to be proactive on all political fronts brothers and sisters. Members of the greatest local in the land- please “Stay Strong”, “Local One Strong” ☝
In Unity,
Jim
