Technical Director Job Description
The Technical Director (TD) position is part administrative but mostly hands-on in the Victoria Theaters. Theater 1 will have 199 seats, and Theater 2 will have 99 seats. The TD adheres to schedules for everything that happens in the theaters as well as assists any outside groups that rent the theater space. The TD has the primary responsibility for the technical operations of productions and performances at the Victoria Theaters, including lighting, sound, set construction, props and costumes, as well as coordinating necessary maintenance.
The TD works under the Senior Director of Theater Operations, the Senior Director of Production, and the Chief Operating Officer. The TD oversees the full-time Victoria Apprentice, and any crew engaged to work in the Victoria Theaters. The TD may do any or all of the following:
· Operate, maintain and safeguard the technical assets of the theatre, including the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
· In conjunction with the Senior Director of Production, determine the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances presented at the facility in advance of production dates.
· Advise producers, production designers and directors on the technical specifications and usage of technical equipment required for the individual productions.
· Supervise and assist, as needed, with set and stage construction and management.
· Monitor the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and tools; arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
· Consult with the Senior Director of Theater Operations and the Senior Director of Production on the preparation and control of production budgets; maintain inventory and order specialized supplies.
· Monitors and participates in tech rehearsals.
· Makes recommendations to the Senior Director of Theater Operations and the Senior Director of Production regarding capital purchases of technical equipment.
· Oversees the technical aspects of all productions, including load-in (receiving materials at the doors of the theaters), rehearsal, performance and load-out (delivering materials to loaders at the doors of the theaters). Rehearsals using only work lights need not be attended by the TD, unless attendance is requested by the Senior Director of Theater Operations or the Senior Director of Production.
· Ensure that all technical aspects of the production are safe, and work smoothly. Working Conditions
The TD must be able to work safely around power tools, on ladders and lifts, and around electricity. The work often involves getting dirty or dusty and being around paint fumes. The TD must be physically fit enough to spend most of the day on his or her feet, or kneeling, crouching, reaching and exerting his or her muscles through the use of hand and power tools.
Applications for this position will be considered while negotiations are under way with IATSE Local One for a collective bargaining agreement covering the Victoria Theaters, and that CBA
will cover this position. The Victorian Theaters are prepared to pay an hourly rate of $34.00
based on a 40 hour week, plus benefits currently being negotiated with Local One, and
employment will be for 52 weeks (including all paid time off). The Apollo expects this position to
begin on or about September 1, 2023.
